If you point to the word CAT and say its letter names—“See-Ay-Tee”—a child hears a string of names that sounds absolutely nothing like the furry animal purring on the couch. But if you teach them the letter sounds—/k/ /æ/ /t/—suddenly, those shapes on the page unlock a spoken word.

- Point out sounds in the wild: Instead of saying, “That’s the letter B,” try saying, “Look, that’s a B, it makes the /b/ /b/ sound like banana!”
- Play “I Spy” with sounds: “I spy with my little eye something that starts with the /m/ sound.” (Let them guess milk or mug).
- Blend words out loud: When asking for something, chop it up.
